Image Optimization Tips For Your Website - Part 1

Many clients often send their web designer images to use on their website. While images are a great way to spice up your website visually, clients must keep in mind certain web standards when it comes to imagery.

Images Must Be Proportionately Scaled

Say you have a hero image at the top of your website, which is a great work to catch a visitor's attention - these images need to be at least 1920px wide. Reason being, a large majority of computer monitors have the dimensions of 1920px by 1080px. The width is very important, not so much in height.

In the below video, we take an example of a photo that was sent by a client to use as their hero image. As you can tell, it's not a very wide photo, therefore we can not squeeze the entire photo into a 1920px wide area, proportionately. The red box demonstrates an area of 1920px wide by 600px high, which is standard for hero images on websites. Notice that when the web designer places the red box over certain parts of the image, only that image can be used as the hero image on the main page of the client's website.
